The pairs consist of an image that literally illustrates the idiom, and the idiom itself. A comprehensive accompanying booklet explains the idioms. If the other player correctly guesses whether the sentence is true or false, they get the card; if not, the reader keeps it. Wandering words

Level: from B2

Ages 14 and up

Playing time: 20 to 30 minutes
for 2 to 4 players

Whether it's a "latte macchiato" in the morning, "surfing" the "Internet," or an "rendezvous" in the "restaurant" in the evening – we use words every day that have "migrated" into German from other languages. Often, we're no longer even aware that they come from another language. Conversely, Swedes develop "Fingspitzengefühl" (a delicate touch), Russians get into "Zeitnot" (a time crunch), and Nigerians ask themselves: "Is das so?" – all these are vivid examples of the exchange between German and other languages.

The German Language Council and the Goethe-Institut wanted to identify more of these "immigrant" and "emigrant" words and launched an international search in 2006. A call went out worldwide to collect linguistic finds that had traveled from Germany or been adopted into German. Over 10,000 word submissions from more than 70 countries and in 42 languages were received.
