Since March 2021, a German-Czech podcast has been enriching iTunes and Spotify libraries: "Hallo Nachbar - Ahoj sousede!" aims to give a voice to colorful diversity and intercultural communication between Germany and the Czech Republic.

With Dagmar, a native of Zlín who has chosen Prague as her home, and Matthias, a native of Wittenberg who lives in Prague, listeners of all genders learn how the neighborhood of two nations is lived.

Every week, the hosts deliver a new episode about tolerance, friendship, differences and similarities between Czechs and Germans.

"Until now, there hasn't been a podcast that delves into both cultures, explores art and music, film and history and does away with prejudices ," says Matthias Trabandt.

"Let's get in each other's way instead of avoiding each other. We can only learn more from each other if we highlight sensitive issues, break taboos and inform each other about conventions".

This is what the duo wants to achieve.

The two focus on explosive, positive and humorous topics, always on the lookout for trendy impulses to report on passions and embarrassments.

The topics range from openness and diversity in the media to identities in the Czech Republic and German-speaking countries.

For more understanding

"We also want to ensure greater understanding between the two countries," explains Dagmar Matejková. Aspects that need attention should be packaged in an entertaining way and provide information:

  • What moves people in Prague and Berlin?

  • What burns under their fingers when they meet?

  • What should be handled with care?

  •

Both podcasters have a lot of experience: Dagmar Matejková has lived in the Hanseatic city of Hamburg, as well as in England and the USA. As an HR consultant with her own personnel consulting firm in Prague, she is in constant intercultural exchange.

In her work as a business consultant, mentor and auditor, she identifies not only different manners but also different management styles in companies in both countries.

For Matthias Trabandt, owner of a language agency in Prague, languages are the focus of every contact for professional reasons alone. As a speech therapist and pronunciation coach, he helps students to get their German up to speed and prepare them for everyday life in Germany.
